Organizational Mission
The Peaceful Presence Project reimagines and transforms the way communities talk about, plan for and experience the last stage of life. Rooted in the Compassionate Communities Model of Care, we strive to improve death literacy and expand access to meaningful and person-centered end-of-life experiences for all.

Position Description
The Board supports the work of The Peaceful Presence Project by providing mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and active, engaged participation from Board members is both expected and essential.

Leadership, Governance, and Oversight

Board Member responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director in developing and implementing the organization's strategic plan

  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics used to evaluate organizational impact, and regularly assessing performance against those measures

  • Reviewing agendas and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings

  • Approving the annual budget and material business decisions; staying informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities

  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director

  • Assisting the Executive Director and Board President in identifying and recruiting new board members

  • Partnering with the Executive Director and fellow board members to ensure board resolutions are carried out

  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments as needed

  • Representing The Peaceful Presence Project to stakeholders and acting as an ambassador for the organization

  • Upholding the organization's commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities it serves

Board Terms and Participation
 Board Members serve a three-year term and are eligible for reappointment to additional terms. Board meetings are held monthly or bi-monthly, with committee meetings scheduled as needed.

Qualifications
 This is an extraordinary opportunity for individuals passionate about The Peaceful Presence Project's mission. Ideal candidates will bring experience from business, government, philanthropy, healthcare, or the nonprofit sector, along with a track record that helps attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members.

Ideal candidates will also have:

  • Residency in Deschutes, Jefferson, or Crook County, Oregon

  • A commitment to, and understanding of, The Peaceful Presence Project's beneficiaries — preferably grounded in direct experience

  • Diplomatic skills and a natural ability to build relationships

  • Personal integrity, credibility, and a genuine passion for improving the lives of those the organization serves

  • Willingness to make an annual financial contribution that is meaningful given their personal circumstances, and to participate in fundraising events and activities

Service on the Board of Directors is unpaid, though the organization covers administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs associated with Board duties.
