August Cary sometimes looks at his life and thinks “Wow, I didn’t think it would turn out this way. Fun!”

His apprenticeship with death began in earnest with the suicide of his father in the first month of 2020, shortly after he met his wonderful partner, Jillian E Webster. Their relationship changed suddenly when she died while guiding a summit attempt on Mt Shasta in June, 2022.

In his grief he melted and reformed with his new life, exploring spirituality, making art and spending time outside. He began a late season bike packing trip through Arizona to find god in the desert, but instead found a snowstorm instead and met his beautiful wife, Dara Kelly, who has an inspiring ability to hold space for his grief and relationship to Jillian. He feels incredibly lucky and grateful.

To train as a death doula with The Peaceful Presence Project has been the latest chapter in a joyful life, engaging with death.
